Rob Lee has dabbled in most areas of entertainment, including creative production, talent management, being an agent and a lawyer, and working in scripted and nonscripted film and television.
How did you become a producer?I originally came out to the West Coast to practice law. I became disillusioned with the political side of things and befriended a lawyer in the entertainment department. I saw that as much as I respected lawyers, the people who really ran the town were the agents. So I was an agent for seven-and-a-half years before I became the worldwide head of the TV division at IMG, and I left to join two dear friends to start a production company in features, television, and music.
What’s your advice for finding an agent? Don’t get hung up on famous agents and don’t get hung up on the name of the agency. It’s the person individually—especially at the beginning. Connect to the person and make an objective analysis that this person gets your talents, understands what your goals are, and will correct you or alter with wisdom and experience. [He or she] needs to be the right person at the right time.
