We’d like to weigh in on a very popular topic. Actors ask all the time, “What’s my type?”
Our response is always the same: “Yes.”
Now, you might think that, “Yes” is not an appropriate answer, but from years of experience casting movies, commercials, television, and theater, that is the only appropriate answer. If we only brought in “types” we’d be shoppers, not casting directors.
The reality is, as casting directors, we are part of the creative storytelling process. So, we see you as nearly everything and anything—doctors, lawyers, cops, mothers, fathers, students, etc.
Some people think that it’s empowering to actors by telling them to concentrate on what their type is, but we do not. We think it’s disempowering. You spend a lot of time crafting the perfect type, and not on stretching as an actor. There are whole lists of actors who have made their marks as specific character types, and didn’t have amazing careers. We hear things like, “He plays all the bad guy roles.” Really? All of them? Our directors usually have another take on that: “He’s too predictable.”
Are you the right
