In the world of Hollywood, where youth and beauty are at a premium, it can be challenging to find an authentic portrayal of older individuals outside of the stereotypical “grandparents” roles. “I’ll See You in My Dreams” starring Blythe Danner delves into that world with characters that are well-rounded, believable, and facing real problems. While the story revolves around Carol’s (Danner) journey accepting the death of her dog and finally moving on after her husband’s death, the film is peppered with outstanding performances from many familiar faces.
Martin Starr plays Lloyd, Carol’s pool cleaner with whom she develops an unlikely bond. The material, combined with the fact that writer-director Brett Haley had already attached Danner and Starr, made the casting process a dream come true for casting director Emily Schweber. “I have lots of war stories about other projects that [were] very difficult and stressful and you’re going up until the last minute trying to cast certain roles.” This was not one of them. “It was so easy that it was almost unbelievable,” she says.
