Jason Berger is the founder and executive producer of Kids at Play, a production company that started out developing digital content and has since moved into TV and now film. Berger talks about weathering the economic collapse and why it’s important to have a pingpong table in the office.
Why did you start Kids at Play? The general theory behind it was a need for high-quality branded content bigger companies couldn’t monetize. I come from a TV background, but I have a lot of family in advertising and I thought I could fill that niche. I was doing TV docuseries. I basically worked out of my house for several years. When I first started, it was during the economic collapse; it wasn’t the best time to start a company, but I was just building my reel. The economy turned around and we were on the forefront of this digital content. We were starting to do original programming, and this content allowed me to keep in touch with everyone I had ever met. There was never a good night of sleep throughout the whole process.
The community you built through previous work seems to be important to your business.I’m only as good as the people I surround myself with, people I think are better than me. You never know what
