With the new school year starting up, it’s time to get back into gear. As an acting teacher, I always tell my students that learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom. No matter where you are, you can explore human interaction as an acting tool. Listening and reacting to others is what actors do best, and there is always room for improvement. With an observation journal in hand, find a place that is alive with people, attractions, and activities and get to work! It may sound strange to sit and take notes on what you see, so I’ve outlined different things to think about in typical people-watching settings.
The AirportWaiting in the airport for your vacation doesn’t always have to be boring. Use that time waiting on lines to observe the types of people waiting with you. How is the antsy young boy passing the time? What is the teenage daughter’s reaction when she finds out that her plane has been delayed? Notice the family who is late for their flight. How might you react in any of these circumstances?
