What is the one quality that will guarantee an actor’s success?
Training? A BFA or MFA in theater? No. I’ve seen actors and models with little or no training get agents, auditions, and book major roles. Sometimes personality or looks make up for training. It just depends on the role.
Talent? Nope. Talent is highly overrated. Some roles in action-adventure films/series, for example, require an ability to run, fight, handle firearms, and be charming. Even a few of today’s a-list stars can attest to that and got their career breaks with the aforementioned qualities.
Agent representation? No. I’ve coached hundreds of actors without an agent who got auditions and booked major roles. Then, the agents appeared on the scene because they had a “handle” something that could sell their client. Without credits and great marketing tools not even the most brilliant agent can always get you “in the door.”
Experience? No. If you’re right for a role, you may get it. Not all starring roles go to stars. Alex Sharp was right out of Juilliard when he booked the Broadway role in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which earned him a Tony award.
