When I conduct online consultations with families embarking on the college audition process, the question I get asked more than any other is, “How can we know where to look for performing arts programs?”
The truth is, there’s such an abundance of acting and musical theater college programs, that beginning the task can be daunting. There are a variety of published lists of the “best” programs, but whether they are the best fit for you is very personal and subjective. The college performing arts program that is right for you will ultimately be dependent on a variety of components specific to your needs, wants, desires, and budget.
So where do you start?
If you are lucky enough to live in or near one of the 16 cities where the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Performing and Visual Arts College Fair tours, that should be your first stop. Research the participating colleges in advance by visiting their website, and go with a list of questions. The fair is large with about 80 program representatives from all over the country and lots of students and families in attendance. Get there early and target the colleges that interest you the most and head to their tables
