Jeffory Lawson helps run the behind-the-scenes financial aspects of Atlantic Theater Company, one of the most innovative and exciting Off-Broadway presences in NYC. The company has kicked off its 30th anniversary season with an in-the-round production of Caryl Churchill’s “Cloud Nine,” plus a musical adaptation of “The Velveteen Rabbit” as part of Atlantic for Kids, and a new musical, “These Paper Bullets!” by Rolin Jones and Billie Joe Armstrong, beginning Nov. 20.
What does being a managing director entail?My responsibilities cover pretty much all the business operations of the company, which include marketing, fundraising, production management, budgeting, and facilities. Most of it is managing the budgets of the organization, both on the operational side and working closely with our general manager.
How does a theater’s managing director help plan a theater season?It’s a very collaborative partnership here at Atlantic in the sense that I am very involved with talking about productions with Neil Pepe, the artistic director.
