As the year winds down, I’d like to point out a few performances that made an impression on me. And no, I’m not talking about the obvious ones that will get nominated for Oscars. I’m talking about acting work that affected me as both a viewer and an agent.
For example, take a look at Colin Firth’s performance in “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” This movie was a surprise hit because it approached the action genre from a fresh perspective, but for me, the real surprise was watching the guy who’d played Mr. Darcy transform himself into an action hero. I’d never, ever pictured Firth in this kind of part, but I loved every punch and every gunshot. The guy really delivered.
This is one of the qualities that makes an actor very exciting to me as an agent. The ability to transcend type is a rare thing, and when I work with someone who can do it, I start to see dollar signs.
Another performer I enjoy watching in literally anything is Greta Gerwig. At this point in her career, she hasn’t had a chance to transcend type, but that’s not an issue because the quirky quality that pours out of her is very endearing and it works well in almost any kind of role. Just watch
