A few years ago I heard someone say that performing artists deal with more judgement in a week than most people do in a lifetime. As crazy as that sounds, those who work in this field recognize that such a statement is actually not too far-fetched. So it comes with no surprise that an inherent gift to withstand rejection is a priceless attribute to possess as an artist—especially if you’re an actor or a dancer who will not only have to deal with direct judgement of your work, but will also inevitably have to face rejection on a daily basis through the audition process. Thus, if you don’t already have this skill, now is the perfect time to work on how to remain self-confident and psychologically balanced throughout your artistic life.
As artists in the entertainment industry, we are familiar with expressions such as, “We’ll give you a call.” If you are a dancer, more often than not, you will hear the words, “Sorry you’re cut. Better luck next time.” Dealing with constant rejection is, in my view, one of the main reasons why many artists quit before they have even started…alongside financial difficulties and the dream-crushing reality of how challenging it appears
