Artistes of the Nigerian Islamic Music industry have always churned out music that barely sails beyond the confines of their religion. Probably because Islam is a religion of peace they are more concerned with music that is content driven and capable of repositioning the minds of people to the part of righteousness in all their endeavours.
But these days the artistes appear be dropping Islamic music and its message just to entertain people. The music world of Jejeniwa, known as Kifayah Adeleke who hails from the prestigious ‘Sasi’ dynasty of Lagos Island, seems to be breaking away from the norm.
According to her, “I believe all gospel artistes, particularly the Islamic artistes that I am a part of, should begin to embrace the culture of expansion through our music. We should do music that can cut across; as much as the message is pertinent to our kind of music, we shouldn’t focus only on the message, we can strive to balance our music in such a way that it has substance, protects the values of our religion and at the same time has vibe to entertain the audience.”
This fast rising Islamic music sensation is set to rock the New Year with a soon to be released EP (Extended Play). The EP constitute tracks like Igbeyawodun (Wedding is Sweet), Focus, which is a cover of DJ snake’s “Lean on” and azikhr song that doubles for OumouSangare’s “SaaMagni” to mention but few. Jejeniwa also opened up on her commercial albums to be released by different marketers, this includes, “Azikhr Special” “Alagbara” and many more.
According to her, the track she viewed as the most promising single of her EP is “Igbeyawodun” which she revealed to be a shift from the norm. Igbeyawodun is different from the normal Islamic rhythm; it is a shift from the norm because I did it with a hip-hop producer named Olumix. It is a song of advice for couples and newly wedded couples; my management is putting finishing touches to it and every other single before they hit the airwaves.
On the promotion plans for the EP, the fair slim music enthusiast explains her plans to release a recently shot music video for Igbeyawodun, which features major Nollywood acts like Ibrahim Chatta and Feyisara Hassan. Also part of her plans include an urban music tour, which she intends using to bring her music closer to the people. The tour is set to cover major states within and beyond Nigeria. She lists the like of Yusuf Islam, OumouSangare and Abdullahi Akinbode as part of her biggest musical inspiration.
