Trust is a tricky thing.
That poor bastard Charlie Brown always trusts his conniving friend Lucy to hold the football in place so he can kick it. Does she? Nope. Never. Not once. She always jerks it back at the last possible second, and poor Charlie ends up with a massive chiropractor bill.
As an agent, trust doesn’t come easy to me. I cover casting directors who agree to set up clients and don’t. I have clients who promise to be loyal and aren’t. And I work with managers who offer to help and don’t.
Like I said, trust is tricky.
Now let’s look at this from your perspective. Should you trust your agent? Well, I’ve been doing this job for almost 10 years and I can tell you without hesitation that the answer to that question is… sometimes.
I don’t mean to suggest your agent is plotting against you. That would be absurd. We work hard to create opportunities for all our clients, and we negotiate lucrative deals when the offers start to come in. But truth be told, agents are incredibly busy people and our assistants are always swamped, so despite our best efforts, mistakes get made.
