Love it or hate it, they are comfortable with their trendy looks. Even though it is said that the eyes are the window to the soul, many have come to the conclusion that it’s actually the beard. And that’s why many celebrities across the world today are stopping at nothing to sport facial hair that helps them to improve their popularity.

From Hollywood to Bollywood, and Nollywood to Ghollywood, the story has not changed. The male celebrities are steadily embracing this trend to redefine their personalities. Particularly in Nollywood, about five notable actors are leading the way.

They are Richard Mofe Damijo popularly known as RMD, former Tinsel star, Victor Olaotan, Zack Orji, Debo Jibola and now Fred Amata.

These actors have not stopped thrilling their fans with their facial looks, not only because it makes them to look sexy and irresistible, but more to that, “it communicates a heroic image of independent, sturdy and maturity to them.” HVP, went after them during the week to find out what it means to wear grey beard for a long time.

RMD: ‘I wanted to sport a new personae after I left govt’

Popularly known as RMD, Richard Mofe Damijo is a ladies’ man any day. After he left politics last year, having served twice as Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, RMD returned to his first love-accting, sporting a new look. His grey beard has become as famous as his name. HVP cornered him while on the set of Opa Williams’ comeback movie, “The Three Wise Men” which is currently being shot in Ikorodu area of Lagos. He explains why he decided to sport a new look to announce his return to the industry.

“It’s just a liberation for me,”he began. “I wanted to sport a new personae. In politics, it was a lot more severe. Now, I am back to my first calling where I am not answerable to anybody but myself and my fans. If my fans like my new look, who cares what anybody would say.”

RMD who was rumoured to have shaved off his beard early this year, said, in as much as he’s still working, his face will continue to change. “But I am constantly working and so, my face must change. I can’t sport this look to another movie set. I will shave my beards if there is need for me to do so. Since I left government, I have been working. I featured in a film in New York, and two films in Atlanta.”

Zack Orji: ‘I have been sporting my beard for the past 36 years’

Zack Orji is another actor whose beard has become his signature. Shockingly, Zack revealed to HVP that he has been wearing his beard for the past 36 years, adding that he does not intend to shave it so soon. Interestingly, Zack has started sporting beard even before he featured in his first movie “Unforgiven Sin” which was released in 1991. “I have been wearing my beards for the past 36 years, “he said.

JIBOLA DABO: ‘He has been sporting this look long as you can remember’

    Jibola Dabo has unique

characteristics that distinguish him from every other actor. The grey bearded veteran actor has sported this look for as long as you can remember.

Those who are close to him said the legendary actor started growing facial hair at a very young age. Today, he has carved out unique identity for himself as a bearded actor. But will he ever shave off the beard? This is a question on the lips of many of his fans. There is doubts if he will ever subscribe to getting rid of his beard.

My goatee makes me to look sexy–Victor Olaotan

For 64-year old former Tinsel star, Victor Olaotan, wearing his afro-hair and goatee makes him to look sexy. The veteran actor whose journey into acting dates back to the 70s revealed that he started wearing his goatee about 40 years ago.

According to him, as an actor par excellence, he carries his goatee as “a mark of honour and a logo.”

“I started wearing goatee since I was a young man. From the time, I could wear beards, I was wearing a goatee. Now that I am a full-fledged actor, I kept it as a brand and a logo. For years, it has changed from black to grey. But I have always looked like this. I have carried my afro-hair and my goatee for the past 40 years.”

Continuing, he said, “a lot of producers would consider your looks before casting you for a movie role. I have never been out of work since I started wearing this look. It has helped me in a way.

Olaotan said he does not agree with the notion that wearing beard can make one look older than his age. Instead, he said, “it makes you to look sexy.” Asked if he will ever shave his goatee? He replied in the affirmative, “Of course yes! The directors might require one to shave one’s beard for certain reasons. Sometimes, you oblige them because you know that the hair will grow again.”

Actor cum director, Fred Amata, recently carved out a unique identity for himself, rocking grey-beard that has continued to ‘wow’ his fans.
