Last night at the awards ceremony for the 50th Chicago International Film Festival, director Abderrahmane Sissako won the Silver Hugo grand prize for best director for his film "Timbuktu," which was shown in competition at CIFF.
The film, which is Sissako’s fifth solo directing effort, deals with the real-life story of the 2012 stoning of a young unmarried couple, by Islamists, in a Northern Mali town called Aguelhok.
After receiving raves reviews and standing ovations at both the Cannes and New York Film Festivals, and other festival screenings, the film will be released theatrically here in the U.S. by Cohen Media Group, on January 28, 2015.
