If we were in school to become doctors, engineers or architects, everyone around us would undoubtedly understand the hard work and perseverance required to succeed. They would accept why we couldn’t socialize like others, and the reasons why our lives are definitely different from people in most careers. They’d know this because they know the responsibilities that come with choosing an extraordinary career.
Now, make the choice to become an actor—a working actor that is—and see resistance and concerns with which you’re met. Why? Because unlike a doctor, engineer, or architect’s career, there seems to be no obvious path to guarantee success for an acting career. And yet there is! The industry history shows that it’s done all the time and now it’s our time to join.
If we use the example of the medical field, 100 students graduate from one of the best med schools in the country and only one, maybe two, will go on to become outstanding physicians. The rest will work yes, and they’ll be great and valuable in their field, but only a few will stand out.
