In the ultra-competitive world of professional filmmaking, it’s not always easy to find support and encouragement (and recognition and funding if we’re being honest) if your name doesn’t rhyme with Schmielschmerg or Schmorshmese. Which is why the UK Film Festival is something of a revelation with its mission statement of championing great works from filmmakers who haven’t yet had the public platform to get their films out there. Side by side with more established filmmakers (like those whose names do rhyme with Schmielschmerg or Schmorshmese), entrants into the festival are granted equal play and opportunities to showcase their talents in the heart of London.
In conversation with Backstage, the festival’s director Murray Woodfield explains why you haven’t really seen a film until it’s on a big screen, the networking advantages of film festivals, and what he looks for in submissions.
