  • Why Actors (Sometimes) Have to Rely on Networking

    A few weeks ago, I needed to get a studio head on the phone. This is a tough move to pull off for a guy at my level. It’s like fighting above your weight class. The odds are you’re gonna get knocked out. But here’s the thing: I had a good reason. One of my more established clients knew the studio head personally, and he wanted me to reach out about an upcoming project that had not been released on breakdowns yet. In other words, my client wanted to get the inside track, but he wasn’t comfortable bringing it up himself.
    So what did I do? Do you think I had my assistant place the call while I crossed my fingers? Hell, no! There’s a smart way to do this sort of thing. So I spoke to a lawyer friend who knew the studio head, and I asked him to shoot the guy a quick email explaining who I was and who I represented—and that was the magic key. When I finally placed the call, the studio head got back to me quickly, and he already knew who I was. This made my pitch 10 times easier.
